WK4Y Story

I was licensed in 1957 as a Novice, KN4QIT.  I earned my Conditional Class License in 1958, dropping the (N) and becoming K4QIT.  George Oberto, then K4GRY, now N4GO, was my mentor, as he was for many of us young boys interested in Ham Radio in the mid to late 1950's.  A lot of thanks go to George from many of us whom he tutored and helped.  George administered both my Novice and Conditional exams.

The Heathkit DX-35 with VFO, and Hallicrafters SX-99 receiver, was my first radio station set up.  The Arc-5 command sets in the photo were obtained after earning my Conditional Class License when I was a member of VA Army Mars at that time.

I had a 10 year interim in licensing from 1971 to 1981 when I started all over and earned my Extra class license in December 1983.

Regards,

Roy - WK4Y
