CW Bicycle Mobile - Field Day 2004
I wondered what I could do different for field
day this year, so I combined two hobbies. I enjoyed touring and racing bicycles
when I was stationed in Wiesbaden Germany with the United States Air Force. I
still have my bicycle that was hand made by Wilhelm Grunewald who custom-made
bicycles for the European Olympic racing team. I was ride captain for the
Wiesbaden Bicycle touring and racing team, leading tours down the Reine River
valley and the Mosel River valley. I raced in local races only to find out how
much better the Europeans were than I.
I put my Yaesu FT-900 with two small batteries on the rear luggage rack and a
40meter Hamstick antenna at the very end. A miniature straight key was easily
strapped to my handlebars and I was ready to go on an ARRL Field Day “Bicycle
CW Adventure”.
With 25watts and a mobile antenna on 40meters I really didn’t expect to get many contacts but I was pleasantly surprised when my “CQ FD” was answered by booming S-9 signals from as far north as KA1NSV Dick Eressy on Cape Cod and as far south as WA4BNO Dick Bell of Charlotte ,NC both excellent CW ops. We had a pleasant chat once they got over the shock that I was peddling my bicycle down the road near my home in Mineral VA.
After a few QSO’s and more miles than I was
used to riding I headed home for a tall glass of ice tea and a bicycle cw
adventure to share with my wife Becky KS4RX.
